Saga Cruises Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of Saga Cruises

saga cruise ship

A key feature in the boat’s construction keeps cabins in the front, farthest away from engine noise, and ceilings higher than standard heights. Details like soundproofed walls, a domed pool, and illuminated closets improve the ship’s more recently inconsistent standing as a seaworthy vessel. Obviously, your accommodation, all the dining as I’ve already mentioned, gratuities, Wi-Fi and from 2020 drinks are included.

How much does it cost to go on Spirit Of Discovery?

The 430-seat Playhouse Theatre has tiered seating and hosts grand-scale evening show productions, cinema screenings, live music performances. Unlike Saga's old fleet, the new boats are fully owned by Saga Group and replaced the two chartered vessels Saga Sapphire (now Blue Sapphire) and Saga Pearl 2. MS Spirit of Discovery cruise ship is the first of two identical polar expedition vessels built for Saga Cruises at Meyer Werft's shipyard in Papenburg Germany. Spirit of Discovery (scheduled delivery on June 28, 2019) has one sistership - Spirit of Adventure (delivered in August 2020/inaugurated in July 2021).

Saga UK's ship Spirit of Discovery hosts special Coronation celebrations

For summer 2003, Saga Holidays chartered Minerva (1989-built) which sailed as "Saga Pearl". Saga Rose was retired in 2009 after a final 37-night Mediterranean voyage. Subsequently, the ship was laid up in Gibraltar and scrapped in China in 2010. In 2014 was acquired Saga Ruby (former NCL ship MS Vistafjord), which last voyage was in January 2014. The boat has 14 decks, of which 10 are passenger-accessible and 6 are with cabins. Selected destination images are available here, and cruise ship images here.

Outdoors there is an observation deck, full wraparound promenade and terrace, pool, sports court and deck games. There will be included excursions in Cadiz, Las Palmas, Santa Cruz (Tenerife), Funchal and Coruna and prices start from £7,995 per person. Classic cruisers in every sense of the word, Saga’s passengers are travelers who expect inspiring itineraries coupled with traditional onboard amenities and comfortable surroundings. In the style of Saga Holidays’ land-based tours, Saga Cruises takes care of the details that discerning passengers don’t wish to leave to chance—from providing insurance and arranging visas to placing fruit and water in every cabin. Ports (and almost all passengers are British), round-trip private car transfers are offered, or if a passenger lives more than 250 km from the port of embarkation, domestic U.K. But passengers can also get rail travel or parking if they wish to travel more independently.

Experience Mother Road and what was left of Las Vegas Route 66 - The Strip is the one place to stay if you travel through Nevada. The best way to experience the Grand Canyon is to stay in the park, close to South Rim. Since you will be in the Wild West, probably you will wish to experience the badlands of Painted Desert; see the Sedona formations of red rocks; enjoy scenic cruising along Antelope Canyon; see the limestone spires in Monument Valley. Saga Group also owns a fleet of six newbuild riverboats/sisterships - Spirit of the Rhine (2021), Spirit of the Danube (2022), Spirit of the Moselle (2023), Spirit of the Main (2024), Spirit of the Elbe (2025), Spirit of the Rhone (2026).

The service is offered if the distance between Saga ship and the city is over 500 yards. At ports of call, you will have a choice of exciting optional excursions. Saga Cruises company is sending a detailed booklet a few weeks before the cruise which gives the chance for pre-booking. If you prefer so, you can also visit the Tours and Travel Office onboard and Saga staff will book the preferred tours for you, if available. In 2017, Saga UK ordered two new cruise ships with capacity under 1000 passengers, each vessel with a total of 540 cabins and suites. Unlike all previous Saga ships, these two are fully-owned by the company.

In early-November 2019 was announced the shipbuilding order for Spirit of the Rhine (2021-inaugurated, 192-passenger riverboat). In early-February 2021 started the construction of a second newbuild riverboat - Spirit of the Danube (2022-inaugurated, sistership). Since 2024 is also chartered Spirit of the Douro (2017-built, owned by Mystic Invest via Douro Azul).

Saga Cruises Spirit of Discovery Review. The Best Things About The Ship

They seek a high level of comfort and service while they are careful not to squander pensions on gambling (the reason why there are no casinos on Saga's ships). They also demand fine food, that is well-prepared, from varied menus. Some of the mainstream cruise lines may get away with fortnightly or weekly menu cycles. That wouldn't be welcomed by Saga Cruises customers who are free to stay onboard for back-to-back cruises. Among the signature venues onboard are the Britannia Lounge (2-level Atrium bar lounge), The Verandah (specialty restaurant) and an outdoor (alfresco dining) restaurant.

They have production shows in the evening and have guest artists. So, that’s fairly standard and, as you’d expect, it’s pretty high-tech being a new ship. One of the things I really wanted to talk about solo cabins. 20% or 109 cabins on board the Spirit of Discovery are solo cabins. Also, what’s great is they cater for different budget types within solo cabins.

Other diversions include the beauty salon and spa - go for a pampering treatment or a massage or try the gym - go for a refreshing yoga course. A well-stocked library with thousands of books is also provided. Another choice is using one of the computers and keep in touch with family and friends. In July 2022, SAGA UK marked the anniversaries of Spirit of Adventure (July 6th) and Spirit of Discovery (July 10th), announcing interesting facts about the boats and their guests. In three full years, Spirit of Discovery navigated ~145,000 NM/nautical miles, completed 48 voyages, visited 273 different destinations, and served 2825 shore excursions.

Saga Cruises offers both Ocean and River cruise travel vacations. The cruising experience is classic, elegant and comfortable. Passengers are able to choose from contemporary amenities such as modern spas, Internet cafes, alternative dining in intimate restaurants.

Instead, passengers can expect an upmarket interior and spacious venues, with the 58,250-gross-ton ship styled on a luxury boutique hotel. In mid-June 2021 SAGA Cruises Ltd announced the names of its cruise ship Captains - Darin Bowland (Spirit of Discovery) and Jason Ikiadis (Spirit of Adventure). Bowland (starting in 1985) was previously employed by RCG-Royal Caribbean Group and Carnival Corporation (HAL-Holland America Line's ship Zaandam).

The quality of the ship and the fact that so much is included makes Saga a serious competitor now to lines like Oceania Cruises, Viking Ocean and Azamara. Finding your way through the deck naming system takes some getting used to, as well; some decks have names and letters, so A, B, C, D and E, as well as Main Deck, Promenade Deck, Lido Deck, Sun Deck and Observation Deck, rather than numbers. Of the lettered decks, A deck is the highest and E the lowest. If you’re trying to count the decks in your mind while trying to decide whether to take the stairs of wait for the lift, sometimes it’s easier to visualise them as numbers, E being deck 7, D deck 8 and so on. The Nov 1st voyage included a flight from the UK to Funchal (Madeira), boarding there Saga Pearl 2, and the home flight from Lisbon back to the UK.

Spirit of Adventure is a cruise ship operated by Saga Cruises and constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. Her keel was laid on 3 June 2019 and she was delivered on 29 September 2020, but in response to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the inaugural cruise was continuously postponed until she officially debuted on 26 July 2021. Saga Spirit of Adventure staterooms (554 total) are all with step-out balconies, which also means that the ship has no Inside cabins. Cabin categories include Standard Balcony, Deluxe Balcony, Midship Suites and larger Panorama Suites. More than 100 "single cabins" are specifically designed for solo travellers (can be booked with single occupancy rates), which is approx 20% of the ship's capacity. Saga UK provides free chauffeur service (door-to-door) for passengers who live within 75 mi (120 km) of cruise departure ports, and also shared chauffeur for up to 250 mi (400 km) homeport distances.

Halifax, Nova Scotia Cruise Port Guide

Pavilion 22 offers a unique and friendly shopping experience and Pavilion 20 offers an open space ideal for meeting tours; buses, taxis and limousines are conveniently located in front of the terminals. Pier 23, the Cunard Centre, is also used for cruise activities. At the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and HMCS Sackville, you’ll learn about maritime history and can tour an old WWII-era ship.

Seafood plays an important part in Halifax’s cuisine, as does the city’s Scottish heritage.

Peggy's Cove is a tiny, picture-postcard fishing village on St. Margaret’s Bay along the rugged Atlantic coast, a short drive from Halifax. They’ve been carefully renovated and house art galleries and studios, restaurants and bars, and boutique shops. Nova Scotia cruises embark in Reykjavik, Cape Liberty, or Boston, and sail for 10 to 12 nights, depending on the itinerary.

When the mills and mines closed for good in 2001, the city turned its eyes to the harbor and the 70,000 cruise-ship passengers who arrive each season. By concentrating on tourism, Sydney is making the most of its rich history and its position as the major city on beautiful Cape Breton Island. For a long time it was known mainly as an industrial center, one of Canada's major coal and steel suppliers.

Amazing experiences coming soon

Tipping for services is common in Halifax and is expected for dining or taxi rides. The tipping culture in Canada is similar to the United States. A tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill is appropriate for good service in a restaurant, and 10% to 15% for taxi rides. See the busiest street east of Montreal -- Spring Garden Road -- voted the "best place to people watch" with its many restaurants and boutiques. Experience Halifax's top things to see and do, all in a short time. An early example of a Victorian garden on 17 acres in the center of the city.

In the past, cruise passengers typically left the town for nearby excursions, like the beautiful Bras d'Or Lakes area and town of Baddeck, where Alexander Graham Bell lived and worked. The Fortress of Louisbourg, the largest historic reconstruction in North America, lures many visitors, and the Cabot Trail is one of Canada's most scenic drives. Your cruise will bring you to Nova Scotia's two most visited ports, each with its own character. Sail to Halifax, where you can stroll along the Waterfront Boardwalk to see the busy and iconic harbor.

Cruise the scenic St. Lawrence River and the remarkable Cape Cod Canal. Overnight stays in Montreal, Boston and New York City let you experience their vibrant cultures up close. If you’re in Halifax on a Saturday, you can visit the oldest-running farmer’s market in North America, which is located on Lower Water Street.

Locally provided supplies include wines, seafood, bathroom items. The North End of town will remind a bit of New England, with six buildings built in the late 18th century, including steepled churches and homes dating to the 1780s. A growing boardwalk along the ocean winds near the handsome Open Hearth Park. Opened in 2013 after a 10-year restoration, it is visible proof of the city's rejuvenation, replacing eyesore waste dumps from the old industries with green lawns, walking paths, playgrounds and ball fields. You can walk along the waterfront right from the cruise terminal, or rent a bicycle.

Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure. Admire New York’s city skyline of towering skyscrapers and art deco architecture. Witness American history with visits to the Boston Common, Old North Church and Faneuil Hall. Journey in the wake of explorers, where Vikings sailed as early as the 10th century. Discover the natural beauty of Forillon National Park or view the rock arches at Percé. Immerse yourself in French culture and experience the finest cuisine in North America.

Nova Scotia is a part of every cruise to Canada out of Boston. Walk the Halifax waterfront boardwalk to enjoy shops, restaurants, tall ships, and the casino. The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 is an attraction on the waterfront too. The city's native Canadian Mi'kmaq community known as Membertou has its own Heritage Park with a museum and excellent shop of native crafts. And Sydney is emerging as a culinary center, with talented young chefs bringing an international flavor to town. This is a festival town, as well, with many events timed for the peak cruise season.

The Best Bosphorus Cruise for Your Travel Style in 2024

turkey bosphorus cruise

This round-trip yacht cruise, with live commentary and fun facts from an experienced guide, covers all the classic waterfront sights-bridges, palaces, the Maiden's Tower, the Rumeli Fortress, and more. But it also includes a stop for coffee and snacks in the characterful Kanlica neighborhood and onboard Wi-Fi so you can share as you go. One of the best ways to enjoy the Bosphorus is to join the thousands of local citizens who cross the strait daily on one of the standard shuttles. Despite the three suspension bridges and the Eurasia road tunnel, plus the metro system, many locals still use – and enjoy – the scheduled ferry services to get about the city.

Disney Wish Stateroom 13000 Tour Princess Aurora Royal Suite

disney cruise ship suites

There are two main differences – firstly, instead of a double sofa bed, you get a single sofa bed and a second pull-down bed in the rooms that sleep five (some only sleep four). The Concierge 1-Bed Suites are around a third of the size of the Royal Suites, and instead of a double pull-down bed in the living area they have a double sofa bed. They still have plenty of space for five guests, although the verandah is a lot smaller and doesn’t have a whirlpool bath.

Ft., it features premium amenities such as plush Euro-top mattresses, Frette® cotton linens, luxury robes, a Sub-Zero wine cooler, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Amber-lit floor-to-ceiling shelves with artsy vases and a dozen or so Disney books, flank the entry-way to a living room appointed with a full-size pull-down murphy bed, flatscreen LCD television, and enviable ocean views. Adjacent is the master bedroom with queen size bed made up with luxurious 300-thread-count, 100% cotton Frette  linens topped with a plush down duvet, two wooden side tables, another LCD television, and a vanity. The marble and granite master bath features a whirlpool tub and two sinks, a separate walk-in shower, and toilet. Family Oceanview cabins are with floor-ceiling windows (unobstructed bow views), King-size double bed (non-convertible), single sofabed, upper bunk bed, Murphy bed, full bathroom (shower-bathtub), split bathroom (washbasin-toilet).

Disney Dream staterooms review, floor plans, photos

More recently, I sailed as a paying passenger on a regularly scheduled sailing in a one-bedroom suite. The Oceanview category of staterooms (Category 8 and 9) features rooms with scenic vistas through genuine porthole windows. The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom is perfect for families, while the Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom provides a more intimate setting. Some rooms in this category offer partial views, but all provide a comfortable and relaxing space. Verandah staterooms are Disney’s most spacious non-concierge accommodations, each with its own balcony outside the ship where you can enjoy the fresh air while watching the ocean go by. The Concierge Wish Tower Suite and the Concierge Royal Suite are the ship’s most spacious and lavishly appointed rooms.

The unique accommodation is sized 1965 ft2 (183 m2) and with interior design inspired by Walt Disney's 3D animation film "Moana" (2016). Most Oceanview staterooms have a Large Round Window (Porthole/non-opening). Of those, categories 9C-9D are with obstructed views (due to lifeboats). The Penthouse's piece de resistance is a hand-crafted porcelain sculpture coming alive. When passengers enter the room, they find the statue pulsing in hues of green amid soft chimes recalling the movie's soundtrack, revealing as the heart of Te Fiti. The Suite's magical experience also includes special lighting and sound effects to provide a one-of-a-kind greeting.

For Disney Cruise Line, stateroom is a first-of-its-kind accommodation, located high in the forward funnel above the upper decks, guests enter via a special entry accessible via a private elevator from Deck 10 and 12 to deck 14. Additionally, there is a nondescript door to a stairwell is located on deck 12, just off the upper deck. Disney Cruise Line is already more expensive than most family-oriented cruise lines, and Disney Wish is the most expensive of the Disney ships. Add concierge access on top of that and, well, it's certainly not cheap.

Exceptional Customer Service

Cousin Orville took over the coolest stateroom on the ship, and rigged up something pretty clever, he calls it automatic blinds. Have you stayed in either Royal Suite aboard the Disney Wish, what did you think about it? When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. Concierge level is also worth it if you want the best service that Disney Cruise Line has to offer. Either way, the primary bedroom area was mostly occupied by the bed, so there wasn't much room for anything other than a side table and a dresser.

Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite

Disney Cruise Line offers a range of options that promise comfort and an element of elegance and grandeur, from comfortable interiors to roomy suites suited for royalty. The Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms on Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream are the smallest in the entire fleet when you are looking at rooms that sleep up to five guests. They measure 241 square feet, which isn’t tiny, but don’t expect to have a lot of personal space if you’re filling the queen bed, the single sofa and both pull-down beds.

Upon entering the room, you are welcomed into a foyer with a spiral staircase leading to the second story and a pantry area with wet bar. The space is open with one side a dining table and the other side a sitting area. The sitting area doubles as a sleeping area with the couch converting to a queen bed. The entire suite features floor to ceiling windows for a view out over the bow.

The wet bar is perfect for entertaining, and the large private verandah with a whirlpool tub is the ideal place to relax. One main bathroom is with a bathtub and a rain shower, the other main bathroom has only a walk-in rain shower. All balcony rooms feature a private veranda with sliding doors (kid-proof locks), plexiglass railings, outdoor deck furniture (2 chairs, 1 small table). Categories 6A-6B have wall balconies, while categories 5A-5B-5C are with plexiglass. Staterooms 5188 and 5688 (deck 5 aft location) are with very small (triangle-shaped) balconies. Family Verandah rooms (category 3A are with concierge service) have a queen (or 2 twin beds), a hidden bunk bed, larger living area (double sofa /convertible), split bathroom.

Throughout the Art Deco-style suite, each room is adorned with original Disney artwork. We appreciated having two separate bedrooms in the Walt Suite, which provided ample privacy. Having three bathrooms is really handy when everyone is in a rush to get dressed in the morning to go ashore. It’s also helpful when traveling with little ones as they never have to wait to use the restroom. "Each of our theme parks has a majestic icon that captures our guests' imaginations," Laura Cabo, portfolio creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, said in a statement shared with Travel + Leisure.

Some of the suites can accommodate up to seven guests, meaning you don’t have to split your family between multiple staterooms. The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah offers a blend of comfort and value. While it doesn’t match up to the luxury of the Concierge staterooms, it doesn’t skimp on space or features either. These rooms, found on various decks, provide up to 284 square feet of space, which is quite ample. The Disney Wish sails with a host of room options that are perfect for larger families. On this grand vessel, you’ll discover a variety of suites and staterooms designed to accommodate 5 or 6 guests, ensuring everyone has enough space to stretch out and relax.

Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays. It’s always worth checking whether paying for two smaller connecting rooms would be better than one larger family room, though. These are limited on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, though, so you need to book early to secure them. Otherwise, the room has similar amenities to the Verandah version – only, instead of the verandah itself, you get porthole windows – either one large or two smaller ones, depending on the specific stateroom you get. These rooms are still incredibly spacious, at 945 square feet, and you get two full bathrooms and a half bathroom to make it much easier for everyone to get ready for their day of adventure.

However, it can easily cost more than double that price to sail in a concierge room during peak holiday dates, when the price of the suites quickly crosses the $10,000 mark for a family. Disney divides the rooms into categories A, B, and C based on attractiveness. Category 11A rooms are found on upper decks and near the ship’s middle, while 11B rooms are on lower decks. The Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah stateroom is the largest and most luxurious suite offered on Disney’s Dream, Fantasy, Magic, and Wonder.

On Wish, that hall was instead used for storage, which was OK but a little awkward, especially because the doors were so tough to open that my 7-year-old couldn't always do it without help. If someone happens to pull out the keycard that allows the lights to come on inside — which happened to us during our cruise — heaven help you, as it is pitch black and almost creepy in there. Frankly, the entire bathroom was divine and felt far more like what you'd find in a hotel than in a cruise cabin, thanks to its spacious layout.

From hiking in forest by a rushing meltwater stream, passing peat bogs and wild blueberries, to kayaking through ice fractured from nearby glaciers. From ice-blue glaciers to beluga whales and the famous bore tide, a single cruise to Anchorage, Alaska will considerably shorten any nature-lover’s bucket list.

ALASKA CRUISES

Their knowledge of the region, the hidden coves, the history, and the culture, all made for a magical experience. I can truly say that this trip exceeded my already high expectations. My two sons and my father-in-law also joined and they were equally impressed. Dean, Megan, and the rest of the crew are very knowledgeable about the region and constantly monitor conditions to provide the best possible experience at any given time.

And for the ultimate outdoor adventure, take a CruiseTour into Alaska’s interior where you can hang with huskies in Denali, and scale glaciers in Alyeska. From top-rated cruises that visit Glacier Bay National Park to scenic rail travel and exclusive Princess lodges, you will find a seamless Alaska experience with Princess. On an Alaska cruise, take your pick of attractions in the port of Sitka. See how bald eagles and local bird populations receive first-class treatment at the Alaska Raptor Center.

The Port of Anchorage is an industrial port located just a five minutes' drive from downtown Anchorage. It is important to note that despite Anchorage being listed on many cruise itineraries (most people fly into the airport here), it is not a port of embarkation. You're most likely to be in town before or after a cruise departing from the nearby port cities of Seward or Whittier. And by nearby, we mean about two hours' worth of driving, so plan transfers accordingly.

Once or twice per season, a cruise ship will call on the Port of Anchorage, but this is an exception. And, if Anchorage's multiple facets don't suit, the surrounding natural areas are available to anyone who doesn't mind spending a few hours on a bus, train or small plane. South of the city, Prince William Sound and the Kenai Fjords beckon with their dramatic glacial ice and variety of sea life. North of town, Talkeetna offers a glimpse into Denali National Park and the lofty Mt. Denali, especially if you can take to the skies.

Our voyages feature hiking & kayaking, glaciers, photography, whale watching and wildlife viewing, birding, as well as Land & Sea adventures and private family & friends charters. Wildlife enthusiasts will be thrilled with the opportunities to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitats. This 13-night cruisetour also features a visit to Alaska’s premier Wildlife Conservation Center. Like everything else in Alaska, the Great Land’s national parks far exceed expectations. Read about Glacier Bay’s seven tidewater glaciers, Denali’s 6-million acres of undisturbed wilderness, Kenai Fjords' astonishing Exit Glacier and other national parks.

Encounter wildlife in their natural habitat at the Fortress of the Bear. Or experience the culture of Russian Alaska on a visit to St. Michael’s Russian Orthodox Church, and relive Native history at the Sheldon Jackson Museum. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future.

Explore fjords, glaciers and Gold Rush-era towns on weekend voyages out of Seattle. Sail 500 miles deeper into the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound on our top-rated Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise. Enjoy two glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary — including Glacier Bay National Park, and Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord. Embark on an unforgettable Alaska cruisetour to the Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge®, where you can take in the beauty of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the United States. Snow-covered mountains dominate the skyline while rivers feed the earth below.

How Many Cruise Ships Mysteriously Disappear Each Year?

How Many Cruise Ships Mysteriously Disappear Each Year?

Determining how many cruise ships mysteriously vanish each year is a matter of studying maritime. For example, in 2020, the Azamara Pursuit cruise ship disappeared for several hours off the coast of Mexico.

Tracking these incidents is crucial for improving maritime safety, safeguarding passengers and crew, and learning from past events to prevent future tragedies. Historically, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 marked a pivotal moment in maritime safety, leading to the establishment of international regulations and advanced safety measures.
